It is so exciting to welcome a new baby into the family. As a Grandma, I couldn’t wait to make a quilt for my first Grandchild.
However, times have changed regarding when it is safe for an infant to have soft bedding while sleeping. Here are some common questions based on current safety guidelines.
No. The American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) has sleep guidelines to protect infants from suffocation. Their guidelines state that "infants under 12 months should avoid blankets to reduce risk of SIDS and other sleep hazards." This is especially important for quilts, which are heavier than blankets.
You absolutely can! A handmade quilt is a wonderful gift. The important thing is to gift it with the "caveat it shouldn’t be used [for sleep] until the infant is older."
For infants, a baby quilt makes beautiful room décor. A safe alternative is to purchase a wall hanging or use the quilt initially for décor in the baby’s bedroom until it is safe to use.
We recommend gentle care methods for all handmade quilts.
